This is the story of Shonim Shaheen
Born in 2004 – Tokyo~Japan, raised in Bangladesh, and completed high school in Canada. I have experience of visiting 15 countries and getting exposed to various cultures. Technology inspires me, and I am looking forward to a career in computer science.Being born in Japan naturally grew my interest in learning more about technology and how the future of society relies on computers. It fascinated me how advanced Japan was in technology compared to the rest of the world.
Over the years, I’ve come to understand that Singapore is a technology hub that dominates the world of computers, even Japan in certain areas. The fact that the first Airbus A380 was Singapore Airlines made me want to explore Singaporean technology more.
Lastly, since Singapore and my country are close in distance, I can use my earned knowledge to help my country more conveniently. I’ve come to realise that Singaporean technology education can help me achieve my personal goals in software development.
My computer science journey started from the moment I was fascinated by the Japanese technology. As I grew up, I wondered how Sony, Toyota, Canon, Yamaha, and Playstation dominates the world of technology in forms entertainment and service. To deeply understand how the computer science world work, I frequently watched youtube videos and read articles on coding topics. Further down the line, I've taken computer science classes in my high school and scored above 90+ in my junior and senior year.
Between June - September, 2022, I did a short internship at SIMEC System Ltd where I further learn and practice web development, and other programming languages like Turing, and Python. I worked with experts in this sector and was able to get expose to the real-life work related to software engineering. During this time, Java became my dominant language because of which I was able to code multiple programs and post them on Github. I've realised that I gain entertainment by creating such kind of projects.
Recently, I've attended the International Blockchain Olympiad in Bangladesh to get a grasp on the system of how digital currency like crypto is transacted using blockchain technology. I believe that I need to be knowledgeable on technological trends that our future relies on.
And finally, to showchase my story, I've structured this website by designing the elements on Figma, and used the prototype to write down the front end code using scripting languages. This is a basic project and henceforth I want to learn the advance methods of programming and achieve my computer science goals.
In 2022, I have graduated from Victoria Park Collegiate Institute in Ontario Secondary School Diploma through the TDSB curriculum.
Studying in Canada taught me about diversity and multiculturalism. As someone who have spent most of their time in the East, learning about the Western culture helped me have a wider perspective on people and society.
I grew up witnessing my parents’ involvement in social welfare. Being inspired by them, I have worked with JANALOK, which is a non-profit social service organization located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and provided community services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I have completed the student internship program at SIMEC System Ltd. as a Web Developer and Programmer. The total duration of his internship was three (3) months between July 1 to September 30, 2022.
Sometimes, a little empathy works much better than anything else, and having understood that, I often visited hospitals during my free time to provide mental support to the patients and their families. I have also run a volunteer blood donation group where volunteers can donate blood to patients in need of it.
I have completed a Youth Leadership training under the Across U-hub organizing located in Markham, Canada.
A certificate from my school confirming the completion of my community service hours at Victoria Park Collegiate Institute.
Besides exploring the world of programming, I’ve well-invested plenty amount of time in photography and music.Hence I thought it’d be a good idea to showcase my hobbies in this portfolio.
To me, making this world a better place by engaging in social welfare and ensuring the well-being of humankind gives meaning to my existence in this world. That’s why I have always tried to engage myself in various social welfare activities just like my parents.
One of the largest development projects in my country Bangladesh is the Metro Rail Project that started since the year 2014 and has been launched in the year 2022. Since like to think and contribute about the development of my country, I have created this documentary last year which contains the details of the project and future expansions. In the future, this documentary will allow me to see how far my country has come along.
This is a short production that visualizes my birthplace in Japan. The video was released on my 18th birthday with the audience being my beloved ones in Bangladesh.
Besides Computer science, I’ve always been interested in studying Japanese Animated Media and related infographics.I enjoyed learning how manga publishers, animation companies, and voice actors work together to make a beautiful product by sorting out the budget and manga source content. Eventually, I decided to create an Instagram page where I post theories and analyses of my couple of favourite anime movies and series. Overtime I’ve managed to create content that appeared unique among my audience and received positive feedback from them. The growth might’ve been slow but my audience grew up to around 3000 followers and I appreciate everyone one of them.
Throughout my journey on that page, I’ve collaborated with multiple content creators such as @boruto0 and @boruto_data, and it helped me increase my experience on how things work on the internet and social media.I figured that learning computer science will help me make social media a better place for content creators like us to feel motivated to create more creative content.
